Greece Athena powers past Irondequoit with eight-run fourth

Greece Athena powers past Irondequoit with eight-run fourth

Greece Athena used an eight-run fourth inning to pull away from Irondequoit en route to a 16-3 victory Monday.

Dan Curtis struck out seven Irondequoit batters in five innings and went 3 for 4 at the plate with three runs and three RBI to lead the Trojans, who ripped off 13 hits.

Athena took a 5-0 lead through an inning-and-a-half before Irondequoit rallied with three runs in the bottom of the second.

“High school baseball starts with pitching,” Athena coach Jason Bunting said. “If you can pitch well, then you can stay in the ballgame and your hitters can relax and it allows you to do some more things.”

Irondequoit starting pitcher Luke Shadler walked two batters and gave up just one hit in the first inning, but two infield errors helped Athena take an early 3-0 lead. Curtis threw two strikeouts in the bottom of the first.
