Stockings for Soldiers campaign a success | News
Bartolomeo & Perotto Funeral Home and Walker Brothers Funeral Home collected 2,800 stockings for overseas servicemen and women, the last of which were shipped out in mid-December.
As part of the annual Veterans & Family Memorial Care "Christmas Stockings for Soldiers" initiative, the local funeral homes engaged community members from Greece, Spencerport, Chili, and Ogden to help design and fill stockings to give to servicemen and women this holiday season.
This is the first year that Bartolomeo & Perotto has partnered with Walker Brothers and is the home's third year of participating in the program - with community participation increasing each year. In 2010, 100 stockings were delivered, and in 2011, 900 were shipped overseas.
This year, the funeral homes set a combined collection goal of 1,000 stockings, and in just eight weeks, more than double was collected.
"Because of the generosity of our community, we're able to recognize thousands of hardworking soldiers deployed all over the world that cannot be with their families during the holidays," said David Perotto, vice president and funeral director, Bartolomeo & Perotto Funeral Home. "The
support that we received from Walker Brothers and the communities they serve has helped us continue to grow this program and we hope to reach even more soldiers next season with love and support from home."
Donors were given the option of stopping by Bartolomeo & Perotto Funeral Home in Greece or either of the Walker Brothers Funeral Homes in Spencerport or Churchville to pick up a free Christmas stocking to decorate and fill with both practical and holiday-themed items. As stockings were returned, representatives from both homes packaged and shipped them to locations around the world.
