Greece native Derek Whitmore playing for Amerks | News
It's a new season for the Rochester Amerks -- training camp is underway at the Blue Cross Arena.
Greece native Derek Whitmore is back with the Amerks and he says his dad has already bought season tickets.
Whitmore has been in the pros four years signed by the Sabres. He spent the past three seasons with Portland. Now that the Sabres and Amerks are back together, he returns to his home town.
The 26-year-old forward played in all 80 games last season for the Pirates and keeps improving his numbers. He knows this is a critical year for him to make the jump to the NHL. ”At the end of the summer I heard there was a change that Mr. Pegula was going to buy the Amerks, as a person from Rochester I thought it would be great if I was a part of that but that was to be determined. Every year is a critical year, then you have to go contract to contract you don't have any job security after a one year deal so I just try to get better and hope you get a contract the following year and helping this team win and get a contract next year.”
Former Sabre Ales Kotaleek was not at camp with the Amerks today. It's unclear what is next. The Sabres placed him on waivers over the weekend and he has $3-million left on his contract.
Defensemen Shaone Morrisonn was at practice today.
