Town of Greece plants a tree for Arbor Day

Friday is Arbor Day. News10NBC was at Barnard Park in Greece where town officials planted a tree.

It is in memory of Richard Roberts, a member of the town's tree council. His wife said it was a fitting tribute.

Rita Roberts, Richard's wife, said, "If they asked him one question, he was on it. He'd get all the books  out. Give them all the information they need. He's here today you can feel his presence."

Rochester Hearing and Speech Center now accepts hearing aid batteries for recycling

Many Americans use hearing aids - going through dozens of batteries a year.

Now these batteries can be dropped off for recycling at any Rochester Hearing and Speech Center location.

These batteries may be small but when decayed, they can leach harmful chemicals into the environment. If batteries are not recycled they end up in landfills.

RHSC turns the batteries over to a recycling company to extract the toxic chemicals.

Director of Audiology Operations, Dr. Ramona Pompea says, "Providing this recycling service is not only convenient for our clients, but an environmentally conscientious thing to do for our community."

Hearing aid batteries can be dropped off at any RHSC location:

Brighton Office: 1000 Elmwood Avenue, Suite 400

Greece Office: 3199 Ridge Road West

Webster Office: 1170 Ridge Road

For more information about RHSC's battery recycling program, call (585) 271-0680.

Army worms invade local farms

Army worms invade local farms

Army worms are on the attack in our area. They can eat their way through a farm field or a lawn in just days.

Bill Dobson lives on Parma Center Road and learned that Army worms are really yellow green caterpillar, the larvae of an adult moth.

Bill Dobson said, “When I discovered them, I said, ‘Holy geez, what is this?’”

He looked out to the wheat field behind his house and saw a virtual army of occupation.

Dobson said,” About a week before I discovered them, birds were going goofy back there, just flying around and dive-bombing, flocks of them in the wheat. Well, we figured out why. It's because of these Army worms. They were eating the Army worms.”

Dobson's backyard is where News10NBC met up with Walt Nelson, a Cornell Agriculture and Horticulture Specialist.
