Challenger World Series kicks off

The Challenger Baseball World Series kicked off Saturday at Frontier Field.

More than 200 players hit the baseball field. Players from areas like Fairport, Victor and Greece participated.

Challenger Baseball has been going strong for 21 years. It enables boys and girls ages 6-18 who are physically and /or mentally challenged to enjoy the game of baseball.

Coaches say the event is about more than just baseball.

“It's a great network of people, of families that are pretty much in the same predicaments and have a lot to share in common, and the friendships the kids build are built for a lifetime,” said Coach Ron Kampff.

Organizers say it's always an exciting day for the young players, because they get to play baseball on the same field where the Rochester Red Wings play.

“As a lifelong Greece resident, I have served the town in many roles throughout the years – as a volunteer fireman, local business owner, practicing attorney and more,” Redmond said. “Greece is my home, and I would consider it an honor and privilege to serve as town justice.”
